Baccarat is an old game, with a history that could fill volumes. Over the years it has acquired all manner of baggage in the form of arcane Baccarat terms and phrases. Here are a few of Baccarat terms and their meanings:
Baccarat- The worst hand, which is worth zero.
Banco- Spanish for the bank.
Banker Bet- One out of the three possible bets in baccarat and most used Baccarat terms. This has a commission on wins of 5% and pays out 1:1.
Banque- A baccarat variant that is much popular in Europe.
Bankroll- The money players want to gamble with.
Burning- These Baccarat terms refer to the period after the cards have been shuffled, but before the game is started when from 3 to 6 cards taken from the top get discarded.
Caller- A casino staff who is responsible for the cards used in baccarat.
Carte- A French terms that mean “Hit me.” Used when asking for another card.
Chemin De Fer- A high stakes baccarat variant tailored for high rollers. Also called European Baccarat and “Railroad.”
Commission- All winning bets in baccarat are subject to a commission of 5%.
Coup- A French Baccarat terms for a baccarat round that’s made up of a banker and player hand.
Cut- Refers to the division of the deck of cards once the shuffling is complete.
Cut Card- A plastic card specifically designed for card cutting.
Dealer- The casino staff tasked with the drawing of cards. However, in some blackjack variants, players themselves can perform the role of dealers.
Discard Tray- This holds all discarded cards.
Down Card- A card that is face down. Also referred to as the hole card.
Dragon Bonus- This happens when a hand wins with a minimum of 4 points.
Face Cards- Cards with portraits on them.
Fading- The placing of bets in during baccarat games in traditional casinos.
Flat Bet- Betting an identical amount, regardless of if the hand is winning or losing.
House Edge- Refers to the casino advantage. This is a margin that ensures the casino makes money regardless of what happens in gameplay.
Ladderman- Any of the three dealers who oversee a baccarat game.
La Grande- The best baccarat hand that totals 9. It’s French for “The Big One”.
La Petite- Means “The Little One” in French. This refers to a natural baccarat that totals 8.
Marker- A piece of paper that is signed and initialled when a casino lends money to players.
Mini Baccarat- A much smaller version of baccarat that seats a maximum of 7 players all at once. It has bets limits that are reasonable and more fast-paced gameplay than usual.
Monkey- A slang term for a ten or face card.
Muck- The 8 decks of cards which are used during gameplay and have 52 cards apiece.
Natural- When the initial cards of the player total either 8 or 9.
Palette- A wooden stick of sorts used by dealers to reposition cards.
Player- One of the 3 featured bets in the game. The payoff is 1:1.
Pass- A win.
Punto- Refers to a player.
Punto Banco- Means Player Banker and is another name for baccarat.
Push- A bet that neither wins nor loses.
Run- A side bet where players can bet on consecutive hands.
Shill- An attractive casino member tasked with luring gamblers into playing.
Shoe- An automatic card dealing machine. This has from 6 to 8 decks of cards.
Shooter- The bank.
Shuffle Up- An early card shuffling performed by the dealer.
Skill- Used jokingly in reference to players having a good run of play.
Standoff- When the player and banker are both tied during gameplay.
Table Of Play- Rules that permit players getting a third card.
Tie- One out of the three viable bets in online Baccarat. It pays out at 8:1 or 9:1 and has a house edge of over 14%.
Upcard- A card that is face up.
